Why do I see multiple service providers and/or IP addresses in my visualization

This visualization uses the IP address that we see your results coming from – typically this is the IP address your ISP assigns to the broadband modem at your home. We use this address to look up your service provider’s name too.

There are a few reasons why you can see different service providers and addresses.

If you take your computer away from your home and use a different network – perhaps at work or at a hotel or even at the local coffee shop – we will report a different service provider and a different IP address. The results in this period will likely be very different from the results from your home broadband service so be aware of this and don’t complain to the wrong ISP about their service!

If your home broadband service fails and your service provider has a cellular backup then your IP address will change and your service provider name may also change.

Similarly, if your service provider makes engineering changes to the network or your service you may find your IP address changes but in this case, the service provider name will likely remain the same.

Finally, you might inadvertently connect your computer to your smartphone wifi hotspot which will cause an IP address change (and possibly a service provider name change). Of course, this will invalidate the results because you will be testing your smartphone internet service and not your home internet service while connected via your phone.

Be very careful not to connect to your neighbour’s WIFI network and then complain to your service provider about their poor service quality!
