RIp: ISP and IP Overview

Description

This visualization shows the service provider and the IP address of your home network. It helps us understand if your computer (perhaps a laptop) has moved locations during the testing period or if the home network access infrastructure and/or modem/router/CPE has been reconfigured or rebooted/reset during the period of the testing.

Real-world impacts

This visualization is primarily used to highlight if your computer has connected to a different network during the testing period – this is important because any good or bad performance due to connecting to these other networks could be very misleading when trying to troubleshoot your home network performance.

What to look for

In this visualization, there are two rows of results. The lower row outlines any service provider we could identify during the testing periods while the upper row shows the IP address of your home internet connection during the period.

Ideally, you will be able to leave your computer at home for the duration of the testing. If not you can at least discount the results that come in while the computer is on a different network.

You can get clever with your diagnostics and detective work by connecting your computer to a known good network to see if the performance issues follow the network or the computer.

You can also see if a service provider change or reset (sometimes identified by a change in IP address) coincides with an improvement in performance results.

How do we test

Each time our servers communicate with your agent we make a note of the IP address your agent is coming from (this is the external IP address of your home network not the private IP address of your computer behind the modem/router NAT).

We also do a lookup to see which ISP that IP address belongs to.
